Kulturbrygger 2011: Trond Hugo Haugen

Tou Scenes "Kulturbrygger" ble utdelt 22.oktober til billedkunstner Trond Hugo Haugen. Juryen sier: "Prisen går til en person som mer en noen andre har fått i gang dialoger, luftet problemstillinger og bidratt til kritisk tenkning i og rundt kultur og kunstfeltet.

Rådmannen foreslår byggestart 2012

Et kraftig redusert forslag dessverre, men iallfall en start.  Rådmannen foreslår å starte opp Nye Tou-prosjektet med et redusert 1. byggetrinn, realisert i løpet av de neste fire årene, til 40 millioner. Forslaget er å sette i stand tredje etasje i bygget som i dag står tomt. Her skal det bli 20 arbeidssteder for kunstnere og fire fellesrom. hele artikkelen i Stavanger Aftenblad

Sonic tank: ENTER

The sound installation Sonic Tank: "Enter" opened on Sep 18th 2008 and is still an ongoing project. From a 4-channel sound system in Tou Scenes entrance space, specially commisioned pieces are played.

A founding member of Sonic Youth, Gordon is educated visual artist and exhibited widely across the US, Japan and Europe, collaborating with artists such as Dan Graham, Jutta Koether and Tony Oursler. Her piece for ENTER, "Song For Reverse Karaoke" is taken from the installation Reverse Karaoke by Kim Gordon and Jutta Koether, commissioned by ELECTRA (www.electra-productions.com) as part of Her Noise, South London Gallery, 2005.

Minimalist composer Charlemagne Palestine is a contemporary of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Phil Niblock. He has composed intense, ritualistic music since the 70s and is best known for his piano performances but he has also used carillion, electronics, vocal, organ and harmonium in his compositions.

"North/South Mix"

Marc Pichelin is interested in electro-acoustic applications in live shows, sound exhibitions and improvisational concerts. Member of Ouie Dire Production, he works to invent unique CD objects such as the sound art post card. His piece for ENTER was presented at Tou Scene for the first time in 2006 and is based on field recordings from Northern Norway and Laos.

Ellen Fullman (USA)

In 1981 Ellen Fullman began developing the "Long String Instrument," in which rosin-coated fingers brush across dozens of metallic strings, fifty or more feet in length and installed in a performance space. Fullman has recorded extensively with this unusual instrument and has collaborated with such luminary figures as composer Pauline Oliveros, choreographer Deborah Hay, the Kronos Quartet, Keiji Haino and Francis-Marie Uitti. Ellen Fullman performed at Tou Scene in august 2008.

Since the end of the 70s, Hausswolff has worked as a composer using the recorder and sine waves as his main instruments, and as a conceptual visual artist working with performance art, light- and sound installations and photography. Collaborators include Graham Lewis (Wire), Andrew McLenzie (The Hafler Trio), Mika Vainio (Pan Sonic), Zbigniew Karkowski, Kim Cascone, Russell Haswell and others.

Casten Nicolai is part of an artist generation who works intensively in the transitional area between art and science. As a visual artist Nicolai seeks to overcome the separation of the sensual perceptions of man by making scientific phenomena like sound and light frequencies perceivable for both eyes and ears. Nicolai performs electronic music as alva noto internationally and he has projects with artists such as Ryoji Ikeda, Mika Vainio, Ryuichi Sakamoto and others. He runs the raster noton record label.

A producer and musician, Helge Sten is usually credited with “Audio Virus” on recordings, a catchall term for "homemade electronics, old tape echo machines, theremins, samplers and ring modulators. Sten is a founding member electric jazz quartet Supersilent and works as a producer on many releases on the Rune Grammofon label, including Susanna & The Magical Orchestra and has collaborated with Motorpsycho, Biosphere and Arne Nordheim.

Pauline Oliveros is a audio pioneer and has explored sound for over 40 years as a composer and performer. 
In performance Oliveros uses an accordion which has been re-tuned in two different systems of her just intonation in addition to electronics to alter the sound of the accordion and to explore the individual characteristics of each room. She now serves as Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Darius Milhaud Composer in Residence at Mills College.

”Petitle Geante”
Stephen O'Malley is a producer and guitarist and a founding member of drone/doom metal groups including Sunn O))), Burning Witch, KTL, Khanate and others. He co-runs the Southern Lord label. O’Malley’s contribution for Enter was released on the Tapeworm label (http://www.tapeworm.org.uk/ttw03.html) and was also performed live with a trio of players at Høvikodden Art Centre.
 
GOODIEPAL

Goodiepal/Gæoudjiparl (FAROE ISLANDS)
Kristian Vester is Goodiepal. His music is hard to categorize, lying somewhere in between lectures, folk music, electronica and vinyl based sound art. His vinyl records are closer art objects, rendered in odd shapes with elaborate design. During his lecture-concerts he puts on display various small, inexplicable objects built by himself, such as mechanical birds and miniature models of planets. Goodiepal’s contribution for Enter is a personal audio essay.
 
 
Tape (SE)
“Dead Low”
Swedish trio Tape was set up in 2000 by brothers Andreas and Johan Berthling with Tomas Hallonsten. Taking cues both from pop, experimentalism, and minimalism, they create mini symphonies out of electronic sounds paired with melodic lyricism. With an array of electronic and acoustic instruments at hand they record at a small stone barn on the island of Öland, east of Sweden as well as their own Summa studio in Stockholm.
Collaborators include Japanese duo Tenniscoats and the quartet Minamo.
 
Thirlwell

JG Thirlwell (USA)
"Krzysztl"
JG Thirlwell is a composer/producer/performer based in Brooklyn who works under many pseudonyms including Foetus, Manorexia, Steroid Maximus, Wiseblood and Baby Zizanie. If there is a common thread to his varied musical styles it is a dramatic intensity and an evocative, cinematic quality. JG has completed commissions for Kronos Quartet,  Bang On A Can and League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots and is also a member of the "freq_out" sound-art collective. He also scored "The Venture Brothers", a hit cartoon show on Cartoon Network.
 
MATMOS

Matmos (USA)
"Second String Quartet Transform"
Matmos is the experimental electronic music duo of MC Schmidt and Drew Daniel based in Baltimore, USA. Their music makes use of heavy sampling from non musical sources including  "freshly cut hair" and obscure sources such as "the amplified neural activity of crayfish". They featured as part of Bjork's group during the Vespertine album (2001) and tour internationally.
 
 
FOCUS_GROUP

The Focus Group (UK)
The Focus Group is a project of London based electronic musician and graphic designer Julian House. His releases are on his own label, Ghost Box Music. The Focus Group's sound is a blend of influences such as library music, public information films of the 60s and 70s, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and soundtracks to vintage TV programmes. House is an award winning graphic designer employing collage aesthetics extensively.

"Teenage Lontano (version with commentary)"
A composer and sound-installation artist, Marina Rosenfeld is based in New York. She is known for her large-ensemble compositions, hybrid sound/performance works, as well as as an experimental turntablist.Her contribution for Enter is a version of Teenage Lontano, a "cover version" for teenaged choir and electronics of Gyorgy Ligeti's 1967 classic for orchestra Lontano. This excerpted version is drawn from the rehearsals and practice sessions Rosenfeld recorded in NY in 2008 while preparing the work's premiere for the 2008 Whitney Biennial.

Nils Henrik Asheim is a composer, pianist, and organist, educated at the Norwegian Academy of Music and Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. Has received a number of prizes for his works for chamber ensemble, symphony orchestra, chorus, theatre, electronics, etc. His original improvisations on church organ have gained him many international appearances, as well as the “Spellemannsprisen,” the Norwegian “Grammy” award.

Tanja Orning is a cellist focusing on contemporary music. After studies in Oslo, London, and Indiana University, she held the position as a co-principal cellist in the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. She is plays with groups such as Christian Wallumrød Ensemble, asamisimasa, BOA, Dr.Ox and Polygon as well as her solo-project Cellotronics. Orning is currently undertaking research in contemporary performance practice at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
Christian Wallumrød has worked as a musician and composer since 1992, and he is considered one of the most prominent musicians of the younger Norwegian generation. A multiple award winner, Wallumrød's records for acclaimed record company ECM and tours internationally.

"The Martinelllis Bring Home A Desire System"
Daniel Lopatin is a prolific electronic musician based in Brooklyn. Lopatin's music is composed and performed primarily on vintage synthesizers, his record Returnal was released to much acclaim on the Editions Mego label in 2010. His piece for Enter is based on samples pulled from a Macintosh Performa infomercial. The piece is broken up into four sections that rotate one at a time around the quadraphonic field as an allegory for clockwise motion and a sense of aging through time.
 
 
Zeena Parkins (USA)
"Half Life"
Zeena Parkins is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, improviser, sound artist, well-known as a pioneer of the electric harp, has also extended the language of the acoustic harp with the inventive use of unusual playing techniques, preparations, and layers of digital and analog processing. She also builds multi-speaker environments to reconfigure sonic spaces.

"Kjøtt"
Jenny Hval is a Norwegian artist and writer. She has studied Creative Arts at the University of Melbourne and Comparative Literature at the University of Oslo. 2006 debut album  “To Sing You Apple Trees” was released under the moniker Rockettothesky and won the Norwegian Grammy Award for best newcomer. Her contribution for Enter is a spoken word audio essay.
 
Nils_Okland

Nils Økland (NO)
"Pust"
Nils Økland is a composer and Hardanger fiddle player. In spite of being associated with the traditional Norway folk music scene, on his 3 LPs (“Blå Harding”, 1996; “Straum”, 2000; “Bris”, 2004) Nils writes all the tunes himself (unusual for the genre) and presents a distinctive style heavily influenced by free jazz.

Neset is Deputy Editor of The Wire magazine (www.thewire.co.uk) and co-founder of Electra Productions (www.electra-productions.com), a contemporary art agency specialising in commissioning, producing and exhibiting art projects across disciplines. She has lectured at MIT, London LCC, Westminister University, Bergen Art Academy, OCA, Tate Modern and various international festivals. She has worked as a presenter for BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction and has a regular show on Resonance FM and is one of three curators of Latitude Contemporarty Art outdoor art commissions.

TAOH residency er et overnattingsrom for kunstnere på Tou Scene. Formålet med kunstnerhybelen er å fasilitere produksjonen av kunst innenfor nye media, visuell og performativ kunst. Du kan bo gratis i residensen i en periode av opptil 2 uker hele året. Tou Scene ligger ved sjøen, bare 10 minutters gange fra Stavanger Sentrum. Residensen med den turkise køyesenga er lokaliser i et 25 kvm prosjektrom med en garasjedør rett ut mot gårdsplass. Söknads info og oppdatert liste over gjestende kunstnere finner du her:

The Art of Hospitality - The main aim of the residency is to strengthen the production of new media, visual and performance art. You are offered free accomodation for a period for up til 2 weeks all year round. Tou Scene is situated by the sea side with only 10 minutes walking distance to the city center. The building has traces from its history as a beer brewery and inspire to site relational and spesific work. The residency and turqoiuse bunkbed is situated in a project room 25m2 with a garage door to a big outdoor area. You share a kitchen and shower with 12 artists in neigbouring studios. As a guest you are welcome to show work but this is optional, our main aim is for you to have time to work on your production. We do however expect a self presentation for the network and audience at Tou Scene during your stay. www.touscene.com
